Information in a nutshell

The first reference of Jews in Levice goes back to the beginning of the 18th century even though their earlier presence can be expected. The presence and settlement of Jews was then limited by imperial regulations that tried to protect mining towns and their surroundings from Jewish merchants. In 1836, Jews started to settle in Levice, most of them coming from West Slovakia and they set up their religious community there. One year earlier, resources mention that local Jews had their tabernacle there, it was not a synagogue yet, only a house adapted for worshipping. The present-day synagogue was built as a separate building that replaced the original three-wing building. The reconstructed former Jewish school that is the intention of the project forms a part of the cultural landmark – Levice synagogue. At the moment, it is not used and it is in bad technical condition. Existing structures do not meet the original purpose any more.

Project description

The main subject of the submitted project is the reconstruction of the former Jewish school, which is part of the cultural monument - the synagogue of Levice. It is currently unused and in poor technical condition. Existing constructions no longer fulfill their original purpose. We will carry out demolition work, excavation work, constructuin work and remediation in this part of the project. The project will result in the reconstruction of the former school building, which will serve for educational and cultural purposes. The reconstructed Jewish school should serve as a space for education, cultural activities, as a center of creativity of the city and the region, along with a permanent exhibition on the lives of citizens of Jewish nationality in the town and region in virtual reality. Many of the events will take place with the help of partner entities. Local craftsmen will work to restore the monument.
